Sankofa, inspired by the Akan proverb ‘Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenkyiri,’ embodies the value of traditional wisdom. Translated as ‘Fetching what’s been left behind, is not considered a taboo.’ It reminds us that learning from the past is essential to navigating the future. The name Sankofa honors this wisdom, encouraging us to revisit and build upon the knowledge of our ancestors.”
Drawing inspiration from its traditional symbol known as Adinkra, Sankofa is often depicted by a bird with its head turned backwards, while its feet face forward. This unique pose conveys the idea of looking back to the past (fetching what’s been left behind) while moving forward into the future.
